'Something that nobody could predict': Motorcyclist injured after being hit by flying tire
A man is critically injured after what Des Moines police are calling a fluke accident Saturday afternoon.
Des Moines police say a motorcyclist was heading east on Interstate 235 while a pickup truck driver was heading west. Near the 31st Street Bridge, a tire came off the pickup, bounced over the median and hit the motorcyclist.
The motorcycle then slid onto the shoulder and caught fire. The motorcyclist is hospitalized and in critical condition. Police say no other injuries were reported in the crash.
"I went over there, and I saw the motorcycle caught fire. I looked down and saw them put a man on a gurney," Ronald Daniels, who lives near I-235, told KCCI.
Since the crash seems to have been accidental, it is unlikely that charges will be filed against the driver of the pickup.
"This is just something... a total fluke. Just something that nobody probably could predict. And nobody probably could prevent," said Sgt. Paul Parizek of the Des Moines police.
