RAGBRAI 2023 daily planner: Route, mileage and highlights along the way
STORM TEAM 8 FORECAST. AN THANK YOU. LATER THIS MONTH, THOUSANDS, THOUSANDS OF RAGBRAI RIDERS WILL ROLL THROUGH DES MOINES AS PART OF THE RIDE’S 50TH ANNIVERSARY. THE ROUTE WAS RELEASED TODAY. YOU CAN SEE CYCLISTS WILL TRAVEL ON SOME PRETTY BUSY STREETS. KCCI IS OPHELIA JACOBSON IS LIVE AT WATERWORKS PARK FOR US TONIGHT. OPHELIA, THIS IS AN ALL HANDS ON DECK EFFORT TO KEEP EVERYBODY SAFE. YEAH, STACEY, NO DOUBT ABOUT IT. WITH 50,000 CYCLISTS MAKING THEIR WAY THROUGH DES MOINES AND ENDING UP HERE AT WATERWORKS PARK, THERE’S NO DOUBT THAT IF YOU LIVE OR WORK NEAR DES MOINES, YOU ARE GOING TO BE AFFECTED BY SOME ROAD CLOSURES. AND THAT’S WHY CITY OFFICIALS ARE ASKING PEOPLE TO DO ONE THING BE PATIENT. BUT THE CITY IS GEARING UP TO WELCOME RAGBRAI RIDERS TO THE METRO AREA. I MEAN, I THINK IT’S AMAZING. I THINK IT’LL BOOST THE ECONOMY A LOT MORE GOING ON THAN USUAL. I THINK IT’S GOING TO BE A LOT OF FUN. IT’S GOING TO BE A LOT OF PEOPLE. I’VE ALREADY DECIDED I’M GOING TO PUT MY PATIENT’S PANTS ON FOR THE DAY. CYCLISTS WILL BE IN DES MOINES ON JULY 26TH AND 27TH. THEY’LL COME INTO TOWN ON EAST 14TH STREET, RIGHT ONTO UNIVERSITY, TO EAST NINTH STREET, PAST THE IOWA STATE CAPITOL RIDERS WILL THEN TAKE WALNUT STREET THROUGH DOWNTOWN TO 15TH STREET, TURNING ONTO MLK AND FLEUR DRIVE TO WATERWORKS PARK. IT’S GOING TO HAVE AN IMPACT. THERE’S JUST AGAIN, IT’S WE’RE TAKING MAJOR, MAJOR STREETS THROUGH THE COMMUNITY. THE NEXT DAY, THEY’LL RETRACE THEIR STEPS, CYCLING THROUGH DOWNTOWN ON WALNUT STREET AND HEAD TOWARDS THE FAIRGROUNDS. ORGANIZERS ARE ASKING PEOPLE TO HAVE PATIENCE. WE JUST ARE ASKING THE COMMUNITY AND THE RIDERS TO EMBRACE THE DAY VIBES. KITCHEN AND BAR IS EXCITED TO DO JUST THAT. COMING THROUGH HERE IS GOING TO BE A LOT OF OPPORTUNITY FOR US TO KIND OF GET THE NAMES OUT AND ALSO GET SOME OF THE EXPOSURE THAT THAT WE NEED DOWN IN THIS AREA. THEY SAY THEY’RE NOT BOTHERED BY THE ROAD CLOSURES. INSTEAD, THEY’RE READY FOR AN INFLUX OF CUSTOMERS. RY STRONG AND AND ENJOY ALL THAT TIME. AND IF YOU CAN WHENEVER YOU CAN SUPPORT LOCAL BUSINESSES WE WOULD APPRECIATE THAT DES MOINES POLICE ARE ALSO GETTING READY FOR THE BIG CROWD. THEY’RE PUTTING 100 OFFICERS ON TRAFFIC CONTROL ALONE. IT WILL BE A BIG INCONVENIENCE FOR A LOT OF PEOPLE. FORTUNATELY, IT’S ONLY GOING TO BE A TEMPORARY INCONVENIENCE. THEY SAY THEIR OFFICERS OVER TIME WILL COST CLOSE TO $200,000. THIS IS ONE OF THOSE SITUATIONS WHERE JUST ABOUT EVERYBODY WHO’S GOT A UNIFORM IS GOING TO HAVE IT ON AND BE ON THE STREET. ORGANIZERS RECOMMEND PLANNING AHEAD, ESPECIALLY IF YOU LIVE OR WORK ON THAT ROUTE. YOU CAN EXPECT DELAYS ON THE 26TH OF JULY FROM 9 A.M. TO 5 P.M. AND ON JULY 27TH, SOME ROAD CLOSURES, FULL AND PARTIAL WILL BE IN EFFECT FROM 6 A.M. TO NOON. LIVE AT WATERWORKS PARK, OFELIA JACOBSEN
