Got dry skin and frizzy hair? Consider this step zero of your new beauty routine.
When it comes to beauty routines, it all starts with clean skin. That makes your shower head all the more important if you're looking to upgrade your skincare or haircare. Some go a step further by finding shower filters that remove dry, irritating and harsh minerals. But unlike those attachable (and sometimes bulky) filters, the Jolie Filtered Showerhead gleams above others, thanks to its streamlined design.
Experiencing coarse, frizzy hair? Itchy scalp? Or red, flaky skin? Your shower water could be to blame. Jolie is the latest beauty hack on TikTok that has users praising its skin benefits on strawberry legs and more. The two-in-one shower head boasts a filter that can remove chlorine from your shower water.
"Chlorine, commonly found in swimming pools, can strip the natural oils from the hair and scalp, leading to dryness and making the hair more prone to breakage," says Alodia Haircare founder Isfahan Chambers-Harris, M.P.H., Ph.D.
Alas, shower filters can be a real splurge, and the Jolie is no different. That's why we got our hands on one and weighed important questions — like how easy it is to install to whether it actually changed our shower routine — to see if it's worth the buy.
What does the Jolie showerhead remove?
Chambers-Harris says, "a shower filter can remove chlorine and heavy metals from your shower water, reducing their exposure to your hair and skin." Jolie claims its shower head does just that, thanks to its filter that contains a proprietary blend of KDF-55 and Calcium Sulfate.
To that effect, a shower head like Jolie's should help support a better skin barrier for dry or sensitive skin types (think: eczema and psoriasis) by filtering out chlorine, explains board-certified dermatologist Monica Li, M.D., at Vancouver Skin M.D. On the hair front, that also means addressing scalp dermatitis; dry, damaged hair and color-treated hair, adds Chambers-Harris.
And while some shower head filters may claim to remove other contaminants over and above chlorine and/or soften hard water, just note that a whole-house water softener works best for that. The Good Housekeeping Institute's Home Improvement & Outdoor Director Dan DiClerico adds that we were not able to verify the claim that the Jolie “far exceeds NSF-177 water filtration certification" as the brand did not share testing data.

How to install the Jolie showerhead
Dubbed the "Warby Parker of shower heads," Jolie's direct-to-consumer design comes in six aesthetic finishes to best suit your bathroom, from brushed steel and gold to matte black and white. Tucked neatly inside a box, the shower head has its filter already set up and has all the tools you need to make sure you're squared away, like a step-by-step guide, a hand wrench and plumber's tape. The Jolie is designed with a universal fit so it can work with every shower set-up.
The Jolie Showerhead sounded like an enticing proposition to my eczema-prone skin and dry hair type to match. And given that my personal experience with shower head replacements has been few and far between, the promises of an easy install made it seem like a low lift for high skincare rewards.
Following Jolie’s helpful three-step guide, it took me about 15 minutes (!) to get up and running. The "tiny, but mighty" wrench truly gets the job done, removing my original shower head without the grunt work. After topping it off with the included plumber's tape, I twisted on the shower head in mere seconds.
Our thoughts on the Jolie Showerhead
The water felt significantly softer and gentler against my skin without sacrificing water pressure. While I've yet to see a dramatic difference with sudsing and lathering, my hair has felt silkier since using and less frizz tops my natural wavy hair. Plus, my skin has felt cleaner for longer — a much-noted (and appreciated) fact amid New York's muggy summer that prompts multiple rinses.
As far as hard water goes, dark soap scum often congregated along the sides of my tub, which, to my chagrin, prompted weekly scrub-downs of the area. Going two weeks strong, I've noticed much slower buildup and less elbow crease on my end.

How long does the Jolie Showerhead last?
Jolie’s filter needs to be replaced every three months. Most shower filters need to be replaced every 10,000 gallons, though many brands suggest swapping the filter every six months. For reference, the average person’s shower is 17 gallons of water, according to a study by the Water Research Foundation.
It's worth keeping in mind that water quality can affect how quickly you need to change a filter, too. Hard water can cause scale buildup, which may cause the filter to clog faster. To help lessen that plight, you can select Jolie's automatic subscription plan that delivers filters to your doorstep every 90 days for $33.
Is the Jolie Filtered Showerhead worth it?
We think so! The Jolie stands out among others we've tried because of its easy install and all-in-one filtered shower head. But you'll likely get more use out of it if you currently shower or bathe with unfiltered water and have sensitive skin or hair issues, per Dr. Li.
Just remember that a shower filter isn't quite the cure-all for your pressing haircare and skincare issues. Whether you use a shower filter or not, always make sure to follow up with a regimen that best suits your needs — like a gentle, fragrance-free moisturizer for dry skin with skin barrier-repairing ingredients ceramides and glycerin.
That said, stakes are low as Jolie offers a full refund within 60 days if you don't see the results you wish!
