With help from the Iowa Natural Heritage Foundation, the High Trestle Trail and the Raccoon River Valley trail are going to be connected at last.

The project's organizers said the trail passing through Bouton will only increase biker traffic through small Iowa towns.
"These communities have the opportunity to showcase their town to these cyclists visiting from not only all across the metro and the state but frankly the country and the best things they have to offer," Iowa Natural Heritage Foundation Trails and Community Conservation Director Andrea Boulton said.
Sisters in Cheese, one of the shops in Madrid, a town along the High Trestle Trail, said it is taking advantage of the showcase.
The store's owner, Chelsea Johnsen, said she is now selling more breakfast options to accommodate the increase in bikers passing through the city.
"Now we're kind of layering in more breakfast options, a lot more salads and green salads, that sort of thing because there's not a lot of options for that on the trail currently," she said.
Johnsen expects the sales to only increase the added trail connection.
According to the INHF, the trail should be completed next year.
