Storm chances shifting east with wildfire smoke expected this weekend
ISSUE FOR THAT. FREEZE IT UP. PRETTY MUGGY OUT THERE. WE DO HAVE SOME DRIER, DRIER AIR ON THE WAY, BUT WE ALSO HAVE TO WATCH OUT FOR THAT WILDFIRE SMOKE THAT’S MAKING A COMEBACK HERE AS WE GET INTO THIS WEEKEND. SOME OF US HAVE HAD SOME SHOWERS THIS AFTERNOON FROM LAMONI DOWN TOWARD CRESTON. BUT FOR THE REST OF US, A LOT OF THE CLOUDS THAT HAVE MOVED IN TODAY HAVE REALLY HELD BACK SOME OF THE INSTABILITY. SO WE DIDN’T GET MUCH IN THE WAY OF STRONG TO SEVERE STORMS. THIS IS A LOOK AT WHERE IT’S RAINING RIGHT NOW. MOST OF THE SHOWER ACTIVITY CURRENTLY IN PLACE DOWN TO THE SOUTH OF THE IMMEDIATE DES MOINES METRO AREA AT THE PRESENT MOMENT, THESE SHOWERS CONTINUE TO PUSH OFF TO THE EAST HERE. AND WE’LL PUT THIS INTO MOTION TO SHOW YOU WHERE THESE ARE MOVING. MOST OF THE MORE INTENSE THUNDERSTORMS HAVE FORMED IN PARTS OF EASTERN IOWA WHERE THE ATMOSPHERE HAS BEEN A LITTLE BIT MORE UNSTABLE THROUGHOUT THE AFTERNOON. WE’LL CARRY THAT LOW CHANCE FOR A SHOWER THIS EVENING. MOSTLY CLOUDY SKIES AS TEMPERATURES FALL INTO THE LOWER 70S, ULTIMATELY ENDING UP INTO THE MID 60S. TOMORROW MORNING, VIRGO, A BIG THUNDERSTORMS RIGHT NOW MOVING DOWN THROUGH THE KANSAS CITY METRO AREA. WE’VE BEEN LEFT WITH JUST SOME CLOUDS AND A FEW SHOWERS AND WE’RE NOT DONE WITH THE RAIN CHANCES YET. THERE ARE A COUPLE MORE FRONTS BACK IN THE PARTS OF CANADA AND THE DAKOTAS THAT WILL PUSH THROUGH DURING THE DAY TOMORROW, BRINGING A CHANCE FOR A FEW SHOWERS. SO THIS EVENING, THE BEST CHANCE OF THOSE STORMS WILL CONTINUE TO PROGRESS OFF TO THE EAST. IF YOU’RE OVER CENTRAL AND WESTERN PARTS OF THE STATE, GOOD CHANCE YOU’LL STAY DRY TONIGHT. SATURDAY MORNING STARTS OUT PARTLY CLOUDY HERE, DRY FOR MOST OF US. BUT WE’LL HAVE TO WATCH AS ONE OF THOSE DISTURBANCES PUSHES IN FROM THE NORTHWEST, COULD SEE AN ISOLATED SHOWER OR STORM FORM TOMORROW AFTERNOON. GENERAL, EARLY OVER THE NORTHERN PORTIONS OF THE STATE AS WE GET INTO SATURDAY NIGHT AND SUNDAY, ANOTHER DISTURBANCE PUSHES IN FROM THE NORTHWEST. THAT’LL FIRE UP ADDITIONAL CHANCES FOR STORMS AS WE HEAD INTO SUNDAY. NOW, IF YOU DON’T GET THE STORMS, OUR NEXT BIGGEST CONCERN THIS WEEKEND WILL BE THE SMOKE. TAKE A LOOK AT THE VISIBLE SATELLITE IMAGERY HERE. ALL OF THIS MILKY SHADING THAT YOU SEE FROM THE DAKOTAS BACK INTO CANADA AS ATTRIBUTED TO WILDFIRE SMOKE. AND YOU CAN SEE THESE TWO COMPLEXES OF FIRES HERE OVER BRITISH COLUMBIA AND ALBERTA. THAT SMOKE IS PUSHING OFF TO THE SOUTHEAST AND THAT WILL IMPACT OUR AIR QUALITY AS WE HEAD INTO THIS WEEKEND. THAT WILL START TO MOVE IN DURING THE MORNING HOURS TOMORROW. AND THEN IT WILL ONLY BECOME THICKER AS WE HEAD THROUGHOUT THE REMAINDER OF THE DAY. THAT SMOKE WILL LIKELY MIX DOWN TO THE SURFACE. SO THAT WILL MEAN AIR QUALITY ISSUES WILL BE A CONCERN AS WE HEAD INTO TOMORROW, SUNDAY AND POSSIBLY MONDAY HERE. NOT LOOKING AT ANY IMPROVEMENTS UNTIL WE GET INTO EARLY NEXT WEEK. SO OVERNIGHT, THE BEST CHANCE OF THUNDERSTORMS SHIFTS OFF TO THE EAST TOMORROW. HIGH TEMPERATURES BACK IN THE MID 80S WITH A CHANCE OF AN ISOLATED SHOWER OR THUNDERSTORM OVER NORTHERN PORTIONS OF THE STATE. THE NEXT FEW DAYS WILL FEATURE THOSE OFF AND ON CHANCES FOR SCATTERED STORMS. BUT THE BIG THING WILL A LOT OF US WILL NOTICE AS THAT SMOKE, AT LEAST GOING THROUGH MONDAY, THE SMOKE WILL START TO MOVE OUT AS WE HEAD INTO TUESDAY. BUT THAT WILL COME WITH A WARM UP AND

The storm complex from Nebraska fell apart before reaching most of south-central Iowa this afternoon.A lot of this was attributed to the clouds that blew ahead of the storms which slowed down daytime heating.Interactive Radar | Weather AlertsThere are still some storms forming over our far southeast, eastern and northern counties that could pack a punch in terms of gusty winds, hail and locally heavy rain through the mid to late evening hours. Our next big weather feature for the upcoming weekend will be the unfortunate return of wildfire smoke. This round of smoke is coming from fires that are burning out of control in parts of British Columbia and Alberta and will blow into the Upper Midwest via northwesterly winds through the atmosphere. This next round of smoke will grip pretty much all of Iowa and several surrounding states beginning Saturday morning and lasting through at least Monday. Expect hazy skies and air quality to be impacted as this smoke will mix down to the surface. Possibly by Tuesday, may start to see the smoke move out of Central Iowa as the winds in the mid and upper atmosphere start to become more westerly.Outside of the smoke, there will be a couple of chances for isolated to scattered storms this weekend. On Saturday, there will be a low chance of a stray storm over north-central and northeast portions of the state during peak heating hours. On Sunday, coverage will increase as a cold front moves across the state. A few strong storms with gusty winds and hail cannot be ruled out during the afternoon and evening hours. Cooler and drier air will filter in behind the cold front on Monday leading for a pleasant day outside of the wildfire smoke. This will be short-lived, however, as warm moist air makes a comeback for the middle of next week with additional chances for storms next Tuesday and Wednesday.Iowa weather forecast Tonight: A chance of thunderstorms early then partly to mostly cloudy. Low 66F. Winds W at 5 to 10 mph.Saturday: Partly cloudy. A stray shower or thunderstorm is possible. High 86F. Winds WNW at 10 to 15 mph.Saturday night: A few clouds from time to time. Low 65F.
