'Off the charts ridiculous': Crowd shoots fireworks at Des Moines police car
COMES TO REPRODUCTIVE CARE AND ABORTION. WELL, NEW AT FIVE TONIGHT. TAKE A LOOK AT THIS VIDEO. YOU WILL SEE ONLY ON KCCI. OUR SKYCAM CAPTURED THE MOMENT THAT PEOPLE SHOT FIREWORKS DIRECTLY AT FIRST RESPONDERS IN THEIR SQUAD CARS LAST NIGHT. KCCI, OPHELIA JACOBSON SPOKE WITH POLICE AND WITH THE APARTMENT COMPLEX MANAGERS TO FIGURE OUT WHY THIS EXACTLY HAPPENED. OPHELIA. JAMES POLICE TELL ME THEY, ALONG WITH THE FIRE DEPARTMENT, RESPONDED TO CALLS AT OAK RIDGE APARTMENTS RIGHT BEHIND ME, TWICE WITHIN THE SPAN OF TWO HOURS LAST NIGHT. NOW, IT WAS DURING THAT SECOND CALL AT AROUND 11:30 P.M. WHEN OFFICIALS SAY THINGS GOT OUT OF CONTROL. VIDEO CAPTURED ONLY BY OUR SKYCAM SHOWS THE MOMENT FIREWORKS WERE SHOT AT PATROL CARS. A CARNES THE FIRE DEPARTMENT ON A STRUCTURE. FIRE OFFICIALS WERE ON SCENE RESPONDING TO REPORTS OF A POSSIBLE FIRE THAT WAS STARTED BY A FIREWORK BEING SHOT INTO AN EMPTY APARTMENT ONCE OFFICIALS CONFIRMED THERE WAS NO FIRE, THEY STARTED TO LEAVE THE SCENE. WE WENT UP THERE TO HELP SOME PEOPLE AND WE ENDED UP GETTING ATTACKED. THAT’S WHEN THE CROWD STARTED LAUNCHING FIREWORKS AT FIREFIGHTER LEADERS AND POLICE OFFICERS. THERE ARE A LOT OF RISKS IN OUR JOB, AND WE TYPICALLY KNOW WHAT THEY ARE. YOU WOULDN’T PUT THIS IN THE CATEGORY OF SOMETHING THAT WE EXPECTED. POLICE SAY THE CROWD OF OVER 100 PEOPLE WAS MADE UP OF MOSTLY TEENAGERS. WE EXPECT KIDS TO MAKE BAD DECISIONS, BUT THIS ONE IS JUST ABSOLUTELY OFF THE CHARTS. RIDICULOUS. THEY’RE WORKING TO IDENTIFY WHO DID THIS. POLICE SAY CHARGES COULD BE FILED. THE APARTMENT COMPLEX BELIEVES THE INCIDENT WAS PRIMARILY CAUSED BY PEOPLE WHO DON’T LIVE THERE. THEY SAY THEIR SECURITY TEAM WAS THERE THE ENTIRE NIGHT. WE HAVE 24 HOUR SECURITY ON SITE, WHICH WE’RE GRATEFUL TO HAVE AS A PART OF WHAT WE OFFER HERE IN THIS NEIGHBORHOOD. KCCI ASKED THE COMPLEX IF THINGS GOT OUT OF HAND. I WOULD SAY THAT THINGS GOT OUT OF HAND ACROSS THE ENTIRE CITY. BUT DMPD SAYS THIS INCIDENT STOOD OUT FROM THE REST OF THE CALLS THEY RESPONDED TO. ON THE 4TH OF JULY. THERE WAS NO PLACE IN THE CITY LAST NIGHT WHERE THIS TYPE OF VIOLENCE TOWARDS OFFICERS AND FIREFIGHTERS OCCURRED NOWHERE. AN OUTLIER FOR THE CITY AND AN OUTLIER FOR OAK RIDGE APARTMENTS, ACCORDING TO BOTH THE APARTMENT COMPLEX AND DMPD, THE MANAGEMENT TEAM THERE MEAN OVER TWO DECADES HAS PUT IN A LOT OF WORK TO MAKE THAT A NICE YOU KNOW, RESIDENTIAL NEIGHBORHOOD FOR THE FOLKS THAT LIVE THERE. WHAT WE SAW LAST NIGHT IS NOT WHAT REPRESENTS THE EVERYDAY THINGS THAT ARE HAPPENING IN THIS COMMUNITY. DMPD SAYS NO OFFICERS WERE HURT, AND SO FAR, NO CRIMINAL CHARGES HAVE BEEN FILED. FOR NOW.
