'Off the charts ridiculous': Crowd shoots fireworks at Des Moines police car
New video shows people throwing fireworks at a police patrol car in Des Moines Tuesday night.
The incident was captured at the Oakridge Apartments, just south of Interstate 235.
Police say it happened after they were called to the area twice over the course of two hours.
The video captures what happened during the second call around 11:30 p.m., over reports a firework was shot into a vacant apartment and had possibly started a fire.
Officials determined there was no fire and began to leave.
Officers report fireworks were shot at them and their vehicles as they left the area.
Sgt. Paul Parizek with the Des Moines Police Department called the incident "off the charts ridiculous."
Parizek said the incident stood out from the rest of the calls they responded to on the Fourth of July.
"There was no place in the city last night where this type of violence towards officers and firefighters occurred," Parizek said. "Nowhere."
No criminal charges have been filed. Des Moines Police Department said they are actively working to identify who was involved with the incident. Once those individuals are identified, Parizek said "charges are appropriate." No charges have been filed at this time.
He emphasized just how dangerous the situation was for everyone involved.
"There are a lot of risks in our job, and we typically know what they are. You wouldn't put this in the category of something that we expected," Parizek said.
Kristyn Arnold, vice president of planning and strategy at Oakridge Apartments, said she believes the incident was caused by people who don't live there.
"What we saw last night is not what represents the everyday things that are happening in this community," Arnold said.
