RIGHT NOW. AND TONIGHT, A FAMILY IN SOUTHEAST IOWA FACES A LONG CLEAN UP AFTER THEIR HOME WAS IMPALED BY A TREE. LOOK AT ALL THIS TREE DAMAGE. IT HAPPENED THIS MORNING. A SEVERE STORM SWEPT ACROSS OUR STATE. COMMUNITIES IN APPANOOSE COUNTY TOOK THE BRUNT OF THAT STORM. AT ONE POINT, 80% OF CENTERVILLE WAS WITHOUT POWER. KCCI IS PEPPER. PURPURA HAS A FIRSTHAND LOOK AT THE DAMAGE THAT ONE FAMILY IS DEALING WITH. STORM AMES IN CENTERVILLE SNAPPING A TREE OUTSIDE OF THIS FAMILY’S HOME, SENDING IT HURTLING THROUGH THEIR BEDROOM WINDOW. NO ONE WAS HURT, BUT IT’S BEEN A TEAM EFFORT TO CLEAN UP THE MESS. FRIENDS AND NEIGHBORS HAVE BEEN WORKING ALL DAY LONG, CUTTING UP THE DEBRIS AND HAULING IT OUT THROUGHOUT THE CITY. SIMILAR DAMAGE WITH TREES AND POWER LINES KNOCKED DOWN BY THE POWERFUL WINDS. THOUSANDS LOST ELECTRICITY, BUT CREWS ARE SLOWLY STARTING TO GET THE LIGHTS BACK ON. NOW PEOPLE IN CENTERVILLE ARE FOCUSED ON CLEANING UP. IT’S JUST IT’S A WAR ZONE OUT HERE RIGHT NOW. SO IF YOU DROVE AROUND, I MEAN, YOU GOT TREES DOWN EVERYWHERE. SO IF IT’S NOT PEOPLE FROM MY CHURCH, WE’RE GOING TO GO AROUND TRYING TO HELP OTHERS AND SEE WHAT WE CAN DO TO FREE IT UP. CLEANUP EFFORT IS CONTINUING IN THE HARDEST HIT AREAS OF TOWN. Strong storms with wind gusts exceeding 60 mph have damaged trees and crops in southern Iowa Thursday.Power outages have also been reported in southeast Iowa, leaving thousands of customers in the dark.Centerville in Appanoose County was hit particularly hard as multiple trees were downed in roadways throughout the area. About 80% of residents in Centerville were left without power.According to the Iowa Association of Electric Cooperatives, about 500 rural customers were without power, including about 250 in Davis County and about 150 in Appanoose County.KCCI’s Pepper Purpura went to Centerville, where one family’s house was impaled by a tree. The tree went through a bedroom window, but no one was injured. Friends and neighbors have been working all day to clean up debris. "It's ridiculous that we were out just watching," homeowner Tino Turrones said. "We should have been taking shelter.
