Strong storms with wind gusts exceeding 60 mph have damaged trees and crops in southern Iowa Thursday.
Power outages have also been reported in southeast Iowa, leaving thousands of customers in the dark.
Centerville in Appanoose County was hit particularly hard as multiple trees were downed in roadways throughout the area. About 80% of residents in Centerville were left without power.
According to the Iowa Association of Electric Cooperatives, about 500 rural customers were without power, including about 250 in Davis County and about 150 in Appanoose County.
KCCI’s Pepper Purpura went to Centerville, where one family’s house was impaled by a tree. The tree went through a bedroom window, but no one was injured. Friends and neighbors have been working all day to clean up debris.
"It's ridiculous that we were out just watching," homeowner Tino Turrones said. "We should have been taking shelter. Maybe it was for a good reason that we weren't inside because the way that tree came down, it could've been worse."
