THE RIDER. WHAT STARTED AS A POLICE CHASE LAST MONTH ENDED WITH A DEADLY CRASH IN DAVIS COUNTY. 19 YEAR OLD REESE JONES, ONE OF THE MOTORCYCLE RIDERS, DIED. CHIEF INVESTIGATIVE REPORTER JAMES STRATTON HAS THE NEW VIDEO TONIGHT. JAMES AND STACY, THE VIDEO FROM JONES’S OWN HELMET CAM SHOWS HIM REACHING SPEEDS OF MORE THAN 170 MILES. AN HOUR, ALL WHILE POLICE WERE CHASING HIM. NOW, NEW VIDEO TONIGHT SHOWS WHAT LED UP TO A DEADLY POLICE CHASE. AND CRASH THAT SPANNED TWO SOUTHEAST IOWA COUNTIES JUST BEFORE 9:00 SATURDAY, MAY 20TH. A WAPELLO COUNTY DEPUTY SPOTS THREE MOTORCYCLES SPEEDING. HE HITS THE LIGHTS AND SIRENS, TRIES TO PULL THEM OVER. ONE EVENTUALLY DOES, BUT TWO OTHERS, DRIVEN BY REESE JONES AND LANE SPURGEON, KEPT SPEEDING AWAY, REACHING SPEEDS OF MORE THAN 170MPH, HEADING SOUTH ON HIGHWAY 63. VIDEO RELEASED THROUGH A PUBLIC RECORDS REQUEST FILED BY KCCI INVESTIGATES SHOWS DASH CAMERA, JONES’S HELMET CAMERA AND SECURITY CAMERA VIDEO. A PRESS RELEASE FROM THE SHERIFF’S OFFICE SAYS THE PAIR HAD, QUOTE, EVERY OPPORTUNITY TO PULL OVER AND SURRENDER, END QUOTE. OFFICERS DID NOT KNOW WHO THEY WERE CHASING AT THE TIME OF THE CHASE. JONES EVENTUALLY CAME TO THE INTERSECTION AT HIGHWAY 63 AND HIGHWAY TWO IN BLOOMFIELD, WHERE POLICE SAY HE RAN A STOP SIGN AND HIT AN F 150. SECURITY VIDEO SHOWS THE CRASH, BUT KCCI INVESTIGATES IS NOT SHOWING THE POINT OF IMPACT. JONES DIED AT A LOCAL HOSPITAL HANDS OFF RIGHT NOW. SPURGEON WAS ARRESTED AND CHARGED WITH ELUDING SHERIFF DON PHILLIPS TELLS KCCI INVESTIGATES THE DECISION TO CHASE AND WHEN TO STOP IS MADE BY THE INDIVIDUAL DEPUTY AND SHERIFF PHILLIPS SAYS THE DEPUTY IN THIS CASE DID NOT DO ANYTHING WRONG BY CONTINUING THAT POLICE CHASE. JONES WAS NOT KNOWN TO LAW ENFORCEMENT BEFORE THE CHASE OR THE CRASH VIDEO FROM EARLIER THAT DAY RELEASED TO KCCI INVESTIGATES SHOWS JONES AND OTHERS DOING 197 MILES AN HOUR. THE SHERIFF’S OFFICE SAYS IF ANYONE HAS MORE VIDEO OR INFORMATION

Newly released video shows a high-speed chase and deadly crash that spanned two Iowa counties.

Video shows motorcycle riders reached speeds of more than 170 miles per hour in a multi-county chase with Wapello County Deputies. One rider was arrested, the other one was killed after police say, and video shows, he slammed into a Ford F-150 after running through a stop sign. 19-year-old Reese Jones died in the crash, Lane Spurgeon was arrested and charged with eluding. A third motorcycle rider pulled over sooner, Jarrett Rea. Wapello County Sheriff's Office and Wapello County Attorney's Office released video from deputies, security camera and Jones's own GoPro camera to KCCI Investigates through a public records request. In a press release, Sheriff Don Phillips says the men were not known by law enforcement before the chase that happened on May 20. The same press release said Spurgeon and Jones had "every opportunity to pull over and surrender, however, they chose to continue from Wapello County into Davis County at a high rate of speed. Other area law enforcement agencies responded to assist Wapello County."Jones eventually came to the T intersection of Highway 63 and Highway 2 in Bloomfield where video shows, and police say, he ran a stop sign and crashed into a 17-year-old driving a Ford F-150. Jones was taken to a local hospital and later died in the crash. Phillips said he was not previously known to law enforcement. Phillips says the decision to chase, and when to stop, is made by individual deputies. He says the deputy in this chase did not do anything wrong by continuing the chase.Video from earlier that day shows Jones driving 197 miles per hour. The sheriff's office says if anyone has more information or video to call the Wapello County Attorney's Office.
