Video shows motorcycle riders reached speeds of more than 170 miles per hour in a multi-county chase with Wapello County Deputies. One rider was arrested, the other one was killed after police say, and video shows, he slammed into a Ford F-150 after running through a stop sign.
19-year-old Reese Jones died in the crash, Lane Spurgeon was arrested and charged with eluding. A third motorcycle rider pulled over sooner, Jarrett Rea.
Wapello County Sheriff's Office and Wapello County Attorney's Office released video from deputies, security camera and Jones's own GoPro camera to KCCI Investigates through a public records request. In a press release, Sheriff Don Phillips says the men were not known by law enforcement before the chase that happened on May 20. The same press release said Spurgeon and Jones had "every opportunity to pull over and surrender, however, they chose to continue from Wapello County into Davis County at a high rate of speed. Other area law enforcement agencies responded to assist Wapello County."
Jones eventually came to the T intersection of Highway 63 and Highway 2 in Bloomfield where video shows, and police say, he ran a stop sign and crashed into a 17-year-old driving a Ford F-150. Jones was taken to a local hospital and later died in the crash. Phillips said he was not previously known to law enforcement.
Phillips says the decision to chase, and when to stop, is made by individual deputies. He says the deputy in this chase did not do anything wrong by continuing the chase.
Video from earlier that day shows Jones driving 197 miles per hour. The sheriff's office says if anyone has more information or video to call the Wapello County Attorney's Office.
