Fired Iowa principal sues superintendent
A fired Iowa principal has sued his former school district and its superintendent.
On Tuesday, former Interstate 35 Intermediate School principal Anson Bonte filed a civil lawsuit in Madison County court. Bonte claimed the Interstate 35 Community School District and Superintendent Sharon Dentlinger violated the state's whistleblower statute.
Among the allegations, Bonte said Dentlinger allowed a student to participate in extracurricular activities, despite receiving a failing grade. Bonte claimed that violated district policy and state law.
Bonte also claimed that in March, an outside investigation uncovered several issues with Dentlinger. The lawsuit said Dentlinger did not follow proper procedures for individual education plans, that a teacher was teaching a course without being certified, and that Dentlinger herself had an expired teaching license.
Bonte was placed on leave from the district in March, and eventually, the school board voted not to renew his contract.
Dentlinger did not want to comment on the lawsuit.
Earlier this year, community members started a petition demanding Dentlinger's resignation. In April, the school board released a letter saying members had full confidence in Dentlinger.
Bonte declined further comment.
