Mother of hit-and-run victim trying to come to terms with tragedy
While friends and family have brought flowers and balloons to the spot where 14-year-old Ema Cardenas was struck in a hit-and-run crash, her mother is asking drivers to slow down and look around.
Ema was walking home from East High School when she was hit. Terra Flipping is now charged with leaving the scene of the accident.
"It's just been hard. Yesterday was the first day I was able to leave the house," said Ema's mother Anna Campos.
Campos is trying to make sense of why and how her daughter Ema left for school last Thursday and never came home.
When asked what she will miss the most about her daughter, Campos says, "her laugh and those hugs. I mean she touched a lot of people and she loved animals," Campos said.
Many stuffed animals have been left at the site where Ema lost her life.
Now Anna Campos wants to talk to the driver who left the scene.
"I want to forgive her. I just want answers. Like, how can she... what was her state of mind leaving somebody just there on the side of the road?" asked Campos.
The family was all set to celebrate Ema's 15th birthday with a quinceañera this weekend.
The quinceañera gown now sits in the living room with the invitations.
"She was so excited. Emerald green and gold, which are her favorite colors," Campos said.
Ema will now be buried in the dress she designed.
"Now I have to tell those family members that instead of giving invitations to her party, I have to give invitations to her funeral,"
"People see the photo of Emma, but I want people to know Emma the person. I mean, she was really caring. Everybody has a loving memory of her," Campos said.
Campos says she will work to lower the speed limit in this area along East University where children are walking home from school.
