Olympic snowboarding controversy: Julia Marino says Prada logo dispute led to her exit big air event
WEEKS AGO. IN MY OPINION WHEN A BOARD IS APPROVED. IT’S MEANT THAT ALL THE RULES WERE LOOKED AT AND WERE MET FOR THE BOARD TO HAVE BEEN CLEARED IN THE FIRST PLACE. ALL RIGHT TO HELP US DIVE DEEPER INTO THIS CONTROVERSY KCR 3 0 TO FITZPATRICK JOINS US LIVE FROM PALISADES TAHOES. SO DEIRDRE, LET’S START WITH THE OLYMPIC RULES AND WHAT THEY SAY ABOUT CORPORATE LOGOS. YEAH, SO THIS IS ALL AN OLYMPIC RULE CALLED RULE 40 THE ATHLETES CAN’T STAND IT. BUT BASICALLY THE RULE SSAY THIS 'I’S IN PLACE TO PROTECT SPONSORSHIP. SO AND ONE SIDE IT’S TO PREVENT THE OLYMPICS FROM BECOMING OVER COMMERCIALIZED AND THE OTHER SIDE. IT’S TO PROTECT THE OICFFIAL. FIXED SPONSORS FROM GETTING THEIR MONEY’S WORTH FOR SIGNING ON TO BE SPONSORS AND THEY’RE VERY SPECIFIC SPECIFIC RULES FOR THE ATHLESTEND A THERE’S EVEN A BLACKOUT PERIOD SO NINE DAYS BEFORE THE ONIPENG CEREMONY THROUGH THREE DAYS AFTER THE CLOSING CEREMONY BOTH THE ATHLESET AND THE PERSONAL SPONSORS HAVE VERY SPECIFIC RULES WITH THE CANON CAN’T DO DOWNO T THE FACT THAT LIKE AN ATHLETE IS ONLY ALLOWED TO ACKNOWLEDGE A PERSONAL SPONSOR SENVE TIMES IN SOCIAL MEDIA. THE SPONSOR CAN ONLY GIVE A WHAT EYTH CALL A CONGRATULATORY MESSAGE TO THE ATH. ONE TIME AND THERERE A 13 PAGES OF RULES DETAILING WHAT THOSE POSTS AN SDOCIAL MEDIA CAN EVEN LOOK LIKE SO TAKE IT PRETTY SERIOUSLY. WELL, WE KNOW SHE RODE THAT BOARD IN HER FIRST EVENT. WHY IS THE IOC CALLING IOUT T NOW? SO THEY’RE COMING OUT WITH TWO DIFFERENT THINGS ONE I THESY’RE SAYING THAT THEY DIDN’T KNOW AFTER THAT FOR UNTIL AFTER THE FIRST EVENT AND THEN THE SECOND. IS THAT THEY SAY THAT ANY GEAR THAT AN ATHLETE USES A COMPETITION TECHNICALLYS I SUPPOSED TO COME FROM AN OFFICIAL SPORTING GOODS MANUFACTURER PRADA SHOCKER IS NOT A SPORTING GOODS MANUFACTURER. HO WEVER PRODUCT MAY BE THE BIG WINNER IN ALL OF THIS BECAUSE IT GOT LOVE ACROSS THE GLOBE EVEN MORE THAN MERINO DID FOR THAT SILVER METAL AND TTHA 300,6 BOARD IS NOW SOLD OUT ON PRADA’S WEBSITE. WOW, IEA MN DAN WE’RE ALL TALKING ABOUT PRODUCT WHERE WEREN’T BEFORE. YE, AHAT LEAST I ALRIGHT, LET’S TALK ABOUT HER DECISION TO WITHDRAW FROM BIG AIR QUALIFIERS. SHE SAYS THAT SHE WAS TOLD SHE WOULD HAVE EITHER TO WRITE A DIFFERENT BOARD OR THINK OR COVER UP THE LOGOS. SO WHAT’S GOING ON THERE? SO THE PROBLEM IS THAT ONCE YOU YOU KNOW MESS WITHHE T BOTTOM OF YOUR SKIS OR THE BOTTOM OF SNOWBOARD YOU IMPACT HOW IT PERFORMSO S IT WOULD BE VERY SIMILAR TO LIKE WHEN YOU PUT CHAINS ON YOUR TIRES YOUR CAR DRAINS ON YOUR TIRES YOUR CAR IVES DIFFERELY ANDNT SHE JUST DIDN’T FEEL RIGHT AS SHE WAS RIDING THE BOARD HAVING COVERED UP THE BOTTOM OF IT. SHE DIDN’T FEEL SAFE. THAT’S WHY SHE CHOSE TO WITHDRAW BUT SHE GETS BKAC TO HER POINT OF HEY, I WROTE IT IN THE FIRST COMPETITION. NOBODY HAD A PROBLEM WITH IT. SO WHAT IS THE ISSUE NOW AND FOR COMPARISON SEAN WHITE WROTE A BOARD DESIGNED BY LOUIS VUITTON WHY NO ISSUE THERE? SO PROBABLY THE BIG THING THERE IS THAT IT DIDN’T SAY LOUIS VUITTON ON. OF THEOARD, B BUT IT DID SAY WHITE SPACE, WHICH IS SEAN’S PERSONAL COMPANY. ITS I TECHNICALLY A SPORTING GOODS COMPANY AND HIS FORD BY THE WAY IS AVAILABLE FOR PRE-OR

Olympic snowboarding controversy: Julia Marino says Prada logo dispute led to her exit big air event
A snowboarder who became the first American to win a medal at the 2022 Winter Olympics in Beijing said her exit from another event she planned to compete in was due in part to the International Olympic Committee taking issue with a logo on the bottom of her board. Julia Marino, who won the silver medal in snowboard slopestyle, sat out of the big air qualification on Monday. United States Ski and Snowboard said that was because she took a hard fall in practice. While Marino said her body was part of it, the real reason was her board, which has the name Prada visible on its bottom. The IOC says Marino's board isn't manufactured by a sporting goods company, which goes against Olympic rules. They weren't aware of the issue until after Marino first competed, the IOC said. "In my opinion, when a board is approved, it's meant that all the rules were looked at and all the rules were met for the board to have been cleared in the first place," Marino said. The IOC offered the option to cover up the logo, but since it's on the base Marino didn’t feel safe covering it and riding, so she withdrew.Watch the video above to learn more about this story.
