Friday night, community organizers came together to create the Rally for George Floyd next to the Des Moines Police Station downtown. George Floyd was a Minneapolis black man who died after being in police custody. Former Minneapolis police officer Derek Chauvin has been charged with third-degree murder and manslaughter after using his knee on Floyd's neck while arresting him.
The Rally for George Floyd on Friday night turned from peaceful protest to violence and vandalism. As the weekend continued, more demonstrations were organized by various groups in the community in response to Floyd's death.
